Congratulations Delegates

The National Committee for UN Women is delighted to announce that five of our members have been selected to attend the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Members Lynnere Gray, Nikki Wright, Davina Hunter, Fadzi Whande and Robyn Tupman will join Executive Director Julie McKay and Board President Elizabeth Shaw in New York in March of this year. The delegates will have a unique opportunity to witness policy negotiations in action, meet women from every Member State and celebrate the Beijing +20 Campaign at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In addition to our members who’ve been competitively selected to participate in the Commission on the Status of Women, we are pleased to announce that Professor Robina Xavier, Executive Dean of the QUT Business School, and Susan Price, Director, PwC, will be joining the delegation as representatives from partner and sponsor organisations, respectively.

The CSW is the UN’s main intergovernmental body for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. It meets annually for two weeks to review progress on global conventions and standards on women’s rights. The main focus of the session will be on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Commission will undertake a review of progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years after its adoption at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. The session will also address opportunities for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in the post-2015 development agenda.

Delegates will attend a range of meetings and events hosted by women’s organisations from around the world, and be involved in negotiating for language which prioritises the rights of young women and girls to be included in the Commission’s ‘Agreed Conclusions’.

The delegates bring a wealth of experience to their roles, and come from diverse backgrounds, including the judiciary, government, the private sector and the public service.

The National Committee is proud to be able to offer our members this opportunity and wish them all the best for their time in New York.
