We are delighted to announce UN Women Australia’s film, #WhenWillSheBeRight, launched at our International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 events, won a Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions Awards in June.
Congratulations and a sincere thank you to the extraordinary team of creatives at The Monkeys for all the work they put in to producing this game-changing campaign.
The film flips the script on the Australian colloquialism, ‘she’ll be right’ – a phrase used to dismiss problems we think will fix themselves with time – to highlight just a few of the many inequalities women face around the world. The film encourages everyone to take action and ask the question – when will she be right?
Disappointingly, since the release of the campaign, the answer to that question has increased by a generation – from 99.5 to 135.6 years. This is the amount of time needed to close the global gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021.
We cannot sit back and wait this long for an equal world. Change requires commitment and action, and that action needs to start now.
“We can’t lose a generation of progress, not now, not ever,” says Janelle Weissman, Executive Director of UN Women Australia. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but with the collective groundswell of creativity, commitment, courage and persistence, we can close the gender gap in ten years.”
UN Women Australia is grateful for the substantial in-kind support of Seven West Media for broadcasting the film to televisions across Australia, and oOh!Media for extending our reach to busy CBDs with billboards and signs. These contributions combined mean over 1 in 26 Australians have seen #WhenWillSheBeRight.
This award is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, is free and equal. Global gender equality is still more than 135 years away, but together we can make it right in 10.
