UN Women Australia statement supporting the Indigenous Voice to Parliament

UN Women Australia supports the constitutional recognition of a Voice to Parliament for First Nations peoples as reflected in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

As a champion for women and girls working in over 100 countries, UN Women works alongside First Nations and Indigenous communities globally and understands the importance of listening to and being guided by these communities on matters that are critical to them.

Central to our work is the belief that women and girls must have a voice in matters that affect them and that is why we accept the Uluru Statement from the Heart and support the referendum for a Voice to Parliament.

We must ensure that the views and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls are heard. The Voice to Parliament is an essential step in creating a fairer and more equitable future for all.

We encourage all Australians to learn more about the proposed Voice to Parliament, reflect on the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and what the upcoming referendum means for First Nations peoples in Australia, both now and for generations to come.
