The Governor-General to appear at 2025 IWD event

Sydney – UN Women Australia has announced that Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia and Patron of UN Women Australia, will attend and deliver an address at the organisation’s International Women’s Day (IWD) event on 7 March 2025.

The event commemorates the 30th anniversary of the UN Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

“This is more than an event – it’s a national conversation for us all about the future of gender equality in Australia,” said Simone Clarke, CEO of UN Women Australia. “We are delighted that the Governor-General, as Patron of UN Women Australia, will attend.”

The timing of the event is significant, as Australia grapples with persistent challenges in achieving gender parity. These include the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, with only 9% of ASX300 CEOs women, the ongoing gender pay gap, and the national crisis of violence against women.

UN Women Australia is also delighted to announce Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and globally renowned human rights advocate, will join the event virtually for a special in-conversation piece. As Ireland’s first woman president and later UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Robinson is a transformative leader who has championed women’s rights, climate justice, and global peace.

The Sydney event will also feature an address from comedian and social media sensation Celeste Barber. Barber, known for her viral #CelesteChallengeAccepted campaign, will add her signature wit and incisive social commentary to the day’s proceedings.

UN Women Australia’s IWD event, with its theme “March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls,” calls for turning promises into progress on gender equality. As one of the largest IWD events in Australia, it provides a crucial platform for advancing the national dialogue on gender equality and raising funds to support women and girls globally.

Tickets for the March 7 event are available now at iwd.net.au. IWD@Work packages are also available for businesses looking to bring the celebrations to their workplace.
