On 17 December 2024, a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck just 30 km west of Port Vila, Vanuatu’s largest city. Followed by a second 6.1 magnitude earthquake on 18 December.
Killing at least 9 people and injuring over 200, the quakes have caused widespread damage, and overwhelmed medical facilities.
Search and rescue operations are underway, with an estimated 116,000 people possibly affected by the destruction.
Key immediate needs include healthcare support, shelter, access to clean water, and the restoration of emergency communications.
