The Australian National Committee for UN Women today welcomes the announcement by NSW Premier, The Hon. Mike Baird, of a domestic violence register and dedicated Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
Speaking at the Sydney International Women’s Day Breakfast this morning, the Premier stated “there is a plague in our state that we need to eradicate and that is domestic violence and sexual assault.”
The scheme will be developed with NSW State Government agencies and the Department of Justice.
Elizabeth Shaw, President of the Australian National Committee for UN Women Board welcomed the commitments made by the Premier. “It was encouraging this week to hear commitments from state and federal leaders addressing issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in Australia. This International Women’s Day we have seen both men and women stand together and make commitments towards progressing gender equality.”
