About Us
UN Women Australia is a registered charity which exists to raise funds for and awareness of UN Women’s work across the Pacific region and around the world. UN Women Australia is recognised by UN Women as its partner in Australia to advance UN Women’s agenda.
UN Women exists to advance women’s rights, gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
As the lead UN entity on gender equality and secretariat of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, we shift laws, institutions, social behaviours and services to close the gender gap and build an equal world for all women and girls. Our partnerships with governments, women’s movements and the private sector coupled with our coordination of the broader United Nations translate progress into lasting changes. We make strides forward for women and girls in four areas:
- leadership,
- economic empowerment,
- freedom from violence, and
- women peace and security as well as humanitarian action.
UN Women keeps the rights of women and girls at the centre of global progress – always, everywhere. Because gender equality is not just what we do. It is who we are.
Our Approach
UN Women’s approach is through partnership. Working in close consultation with community leaders and governments, UN Women collects and disseminates evidence to shape effective policies and programs. At the heart of this work is ensuring that everyone everywhere, regardless of gender, has the same opportunity. To lead, to learn, to earn a decent living and to live a life free from violence and discrimination.
Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but its achievement has enormous socio-economic impacts. Empowering women fuels thriving economies, spurring productivity and growth. Still today gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in every country in the world. Women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage gaps. They are often denied access to basic education and health care. Women in all parts of the world suffer violence and discrimination. They are under-represented in political and economic decision-making processes.
UN Women is working to change that, and has set a deadline to achieving gender equality: we are working hand in hand with partners and governments around the world to achieve Planet 50/50 by 2030.
