Support Syrian Refugees
Give hope and safety to Syrian refugee women and their families who have fled terrible violence.
Since the start of the conflict in 2011, nearly five million people have fled Syria, most of them women and children – like Hayam and her family.
Hayam is a single mother in the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan. Life for Hayam and her children in Syria was hard. Married to an abusive man, Hayam lost two pregnancies to his beatings. Her family refused to help her and the police took her husband on his “promise” never to hurt her again.
Women and girl refugees are at highest risk of exploitation, trafficking, and sexual abuse.
Forced to flee Syria with her abusive husband, he then abandoned her and remarried. This left Hayam alone to support herself and her children. Hayam joined one of UN Women’s Oasis centres inside the Za’atari refugee camp. At the Oasis centre, a safe place developed by UN Women where women can learn skills and earn an income, Hayam has been participating in cash-for-work programs, enabling her to support her children, build her confidence and feel at ease.
