Sydney, Australia, 8 October 2026: UN Women Australia unveils ‘How Much Longer?’ as the official theme for International Women’s Month (IWM) 2027, as UN Women reveals not a single target under the global goal for gender equality is on track to be met by 2030.

It is a question for governments, institutions and communities about how long inequality will be tolerated. We already know why gender inequality persists and what it takes to fix it. The gap is action, and that gap is growing.
UN Women and UN DESA’s Gender Snapshot 2026, released in September, shows the world going backwards on almost every front. Funding for gender equality has collapsed to its lowest level since 2021. One in three institutions built to protect women’s rights has been stripped of power in just two years. In the past 12 months alone, 316 million women experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. With three years left until the 2030 deadline, not a single target under the global goal for gender equality is on track.
Australia is no exception. Women worked an extra 48 days into the new financial year to catch up on men’s pay (Equal Pay Day, 17 August), do 31 hours of unpaid work a week compared with 22 for men, and one in four have experienced intimate partner violence since the age of 15.
The theme arrives as UN member states prepare to gather in New York for the 71st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW71) in March 2027, to discuss accelerating progress towards gender equality.
Simone Clarke, CEO of UN Women Australia, said: “We know women are paid less. We know women aren’t safe. We know we need more women in leadership. ‘How Much Longer?’ is a question we’re posing to governments, companies, communities and individuals – to everyone that laments the lack of progress for women – but has waited to act. If not now, then when?”
