It is almost impossible to imagine what it is like to have to flee your home with nothing but the clothes on your back. But for many women in crisis, often there is no other option. Women just like Aamira* who describes her experience before fleeing the war-torn city of Mosul, Iraq.
“I came from a poor family. Even though we were poor, we had a peaceful life in Mosul before ISIS. During ISIS, it was a very difficult life for us. I could not leave the house for more than two years. For three years, I could not communicate with family members out of Mosul who were in another camp. We were informed that those who are caught using a phone would immediately be executed by cutting our heads off in public. Some of my friends have been taken as wives by ISIS, and, many have been raped. When I think about the future, my goal is to return back to a safe and peaceful Mosul.”
Sadly, in humanitarian crises, the needs of women and girls are often forgotten. UN Women works to ensure women and girls affected by crisis and disaster have basic necessities such as soap, thermal blankets, sanitary pads and other essential items, giving women and girls back their dignity in the face of devastation.
