What is UN Women?

UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. As the newest UN agency, it was created to accelerate progress on achieving gender equality. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women works to meet women’s needs worldwide.

In Australia, UN Women is represented by a National Committee that works to strengthen the relationship between UN Women and the Australian government, as well as with other civil society groups within Australia and the Pacific region. The National Committee encourages greater understanding of gender issues both in Australia and globally, and seeks to raise funds to support UN Women’s programs to empower women.

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th across the world.  It is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2017, empower a woman, empower a nation, focuses on the importance of women’s economic empowerment and political participation and leadership. When women are empowered, entire communities benefit.

Where do the funds raised from the sale of ribbons go?

The funds raised through the sale of ribbons will directly support the work of the UN Women National Committee Australia and UN Women in Papua New Guinea and across the Pacific as well as UN Women Pakistan.

How do we sell merchandise?

What if we run out of ribbons?

Ribbons should be sold between 1 February and 30 March. If you run out, additional stock may be ordered from the UN Women National Committee Australia offices by calling (02) 6173 3222 or emailing iwd@unwomen.org.au.

How do we return unsold merchandise?

Any merchandise that is not sold by 30 March can be donated back to the UN Women National Committee Australia by posting it to the following address:
